Finished Sunbeam Knitted dolls

Calico and Ivy's
SUNBEAM DOLL PATTERN

For the UTHANDO PROJECT,
Dolls for Zulu children

The Sunbeam Doll takes one ball of yarn.
It can be worked in garter stitch, though this might take a
little more yarn. We ask that you knit the dolls in tones of brown as this is what the children relate to.
You may choose to change to bright colours or stripes as if the doll was dressed, leaving any skin in brown.
This pattern is quick and suits beginners and children.
Feel free to copy this pattern and give it to anyone interested in joining the Uthando Project. Thank you!

Materials:

1 Ball of Jo Sharp DK or Merino Magic 8ply yarn (approx. 97 metres)
1 pair of 3.75mm needles; polyester filling

Instructions:

Cast on 22 stitches
Knit one row, Purl one row (stocking stitch) – repeating for 40 rows
Cast on 15 stitches at start of next 2 rows (52 stitches)
Stocking stitch for 16 rows
Cast off 15 stitches at the beginning of next 2 rows (22 stitches)
Work 14 rows in stocking stitch for the head.
Work 2 stitches together at each end of next and following 2 rows (10 stitches)
Cast off.
Repeat the above instructions for the back of the doll.
You can choose to knit the back of the head in black moss stitch for hair.

With right sides together, stitch around leaving an opening at the top of the head. Turn inside out. Sew a small running stitch to define the legs for about 15cms down the centre to the bottom edge.
Stuff Sunbeam with polyester filling using a pencil or chopstick.
Make the doll soft and cuddly, but with firm neck.
You can sew a small running stitch around the neck and draw it up to create a neck and face. We embroidered the face with a pinky brown mouth and dark eyes highlighted with white.
The hair is created by stitching or knotting tightly, tufts of black yarn on the top of the head, tie, frizz or plait it with a contrast colour to create a lively look for your doll.
